1 Introduction

As the world grapples with the challenges of energy conservation and sustainability, modern homes rely even more on electricity. My old house was built in 1959 but recently had a full remodeling including a change to the latest high efficiency appliances. To my surprise, my electricity bills went up by more than 50% and not down. In the quest of lowering my electricity bills I started by measuring consumption. I wanted a sleek energy monitoring solution with real-time insights into my electricity usage. 2 Installation and Setup

The Emporia Vue 3’s installation process is designed to be user-friendly and straightforward. You’ll begin by installing the Home Energy Monitor at your electrical panel. This involves connecting the monitor to your main electrical panel using the provided wiring and clamps. You can see that my electric panel is still pretty old but I had no issues hooking this unit up (I still need to cut the sensor wires to size and declutter the spaghetti in the bottom of the panel). The installation process typically takes about 30 minutes, but it took me a little longer since I wanted to be absolutely sure before doing anything in the electric panel. The other reason why it took me longer to set it up is that I had an issue that ended up being a ‘user error’ as I explain later in this text. Make sure to consult the manufacturer’s instructions for specific steps and safety precautions. Once the Home Energy Monitor is installed, you’ll need to download the Emporia Vue app on your smartphone or tablet. The app serves as your central hub for viewing real-time energy usage data, setting alerts, and managing your home’s energy consumption. The app will guide you through the setup process, which involves connecting the Home Energy Monitor to your Wi-Fi network. Once the connection is established, you’ll be able to access and monitor your home’s energy usage data from anywhere.

The Emporia Vue 3 Home Energy Monitor is designed for a straightforward and safe installation process, but it requires careful attention to detail. To begin, ensure all power to the electrical panel is turned off by switching the main breaker. This step is critical to avoid any electrical shocks or injuries.

Once the power is off, you can proceed to connect the necessary wires. The Emporia Vue 3 involves hooking up four main wires connected to the panel, two live and two neutral wires. There are also 16 50A sensors clamped to individual circuits and two 200A sensors for the main service wires. It is recommended to use non-conducting gloves and follow the installation guide meticulously to avoid any mistakes. For instance, ensuring that the neutral wire makes proper contact with the copper is vital, as any misconnection can lead to significant delays and potential safety hazards.

This is a system for DIY installation but given the complexity and the risks involved in working with electrical systems, it is recommended that the installation is performed by a licensed electrician or a qualified professional. This ensures that the installation complies with regional electrical codes and safety standards, thereby minimizing the risk of injury or damage.

2.2 Initial Challenges and Solutions

Installing a home energy monitor can be a daunting task, especially for those unfamiliar with electrical systems. While the Emporia Vue 3 is designed for ease of installation, there are some initial challenges that users might encounter. One common hurdle is connecting the device to the electrical panel. It’s crucial to disconnect power to the panel before making any connections, and wearing non-conductive gloves is recommended for personal safety. A common mistake is improper wire connections, which can lead to the device not powering on. This was my experience, as I initially had a neutral wire that wasn’t making proper contact, resulting in a non-functional device. Once I identified and corrected the issue, the Emporia Vue 3 sprang to life, providing valuable real-time energy consumption data. It’s important to note that the number of sensors included with the Emporia Vue 3 may not be sufficient to monitor all circuits in a home. This was the case for me, as I had to prioritize which circuits were most important to monitor. However, the flexibility of the system allows for the purchase of additional sensors and control units to expand monitoring capabilities.

3 Features and Functionality

The Emporia Vue 3 is packed with features that make it an awesome tool for home energy monitoring. One of the standout features is its enhanced network connectivity, which includes both Wi-Fi and an Ethernet port, providing with flexible and reliable internet connection options. I had my main internet router located in the Utility room so I decided to go with Ethernet.

The Vue 3 also boasts refined voltage measurement accuracy, with independently measured voltage channels that eliminate errors caused by adjacent channels. This ensures consistent accuracy across a range of load power factors, maintaining an expected accuracy threshold of ±2%. The trade off is thou that for 240V circuits, if high accuracy is needed, you will need to install two sensors. You still have the option of using just one sensor and then configure the software in the smartphone app to duplicate consumption in that circuit assuming that there is a balanced load.

For installation, the Vue 3 offers improved CT sensor connectivity using screw terminals, allowing for customized CT wire lengths and a neater installation.  This is the part that I still need to do. In addition, if you have space in your panel, the control box also supports DIN rail mounting. 

Regarding monitoring features, the Vue 3 enables real-time monitoring of energy usage, including individual circuit tracking with up to 16 branch current sensors. It also supports solar net metering, providing detailed insights into energy consumption and production.

The device seamlessly integrates with other Emporia products, such as smart plugs, EV chargers, and home battery systems, as well as third-party smart thermostats and appliances, to optimize energy efficiency and savings. These features collectively make the Emporia Vue 3 a comprehensive and user-friendly home energy monitor. I have an EcoBee Smart Thermostat and the integration was really easy.

As mentioned earlier, by installing two sensors for each of the 240V breakers, users can achieve enhanced accuracy in their energy monitoring.

I have multiple 240V circuits and ended up monitoring 10 individual circuits plus the main lines. The non monitored circuits are shown as “Balance” in the app so you still have an idea of of their collective consumption.  Detailed tracking has proven effective in identifying energy-hogging appliances, such as my  dehumidifier that might be drawing almost 500 watts. Such precise data will help me make informed decisions to reduce my energy consumption and lower utility bills, potentially saving 10% or more on my monthly energy expenses.
